Instagram engagement rate calculator

Drop in the numbers from any post or account and get the engagement rate in seconds, graded against what accounts your size actually average.

Your numbers

Measuring several posts? Add the totals and set "posts measured" to the number of posts — you'll get the average rate per post.

Your rate

Enter your follower count and at least one like or comment to see your rate.

A number tells you that you have a problem. It doesn't tell you what to fix.

IG Decode pulls the highest-performing posts for any handle or hashtag and breaks each one down into the hook, shot list, script, caption formula, hashtag plan and posting time that made it work — so you can rebuild it for your own account.

No card required. Free accounts get 2 searches and 2 full breakdowns a month.

How Instagram engagement rate is calculated

The standard formula divides total interactions by follower count:

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + saves + shares) / followers x 100
  • By followers — the version above. Most common, and the one brands quote in outreach.
  • By reach — interactions divided by accounts reached. More honest about content quality, since it ignores the dead followers who never see the post. Only you can see this one, in your own Insights.
  • By impressions — the strictest version, since one person can generate several impressions. Always the lowest number of the three.

Saves and shares are optional in the calculator because you can't see them on other people's posts — but include them for your own account. Instagram weights both heavily, and a post with modest likes but heavy saves usually out-travels a post with the reverse.
